The NZ rates inside every tool

Every calculator reads from one list of New Zealand rates. When one changes, we update it once and every buyer's tools update with it. Last checked 3 October 2026, for the tax year 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.

GST

Inland Revenue

15%. You must register once you turn over $60,000 in any 12 months. The tools strip GST from your takings and let you claim it on costs if you tick "GST registered".

Minimum wage

From 1 April 2026

Adult $23.95 an hour. Starting-out and training $19.16. Reviewed every year, usually changing on 1 April.

KiwiSaver

From 1 April 2026

Employer contribution 3.5% of gross pay, on top of the wage. It rises to 4% on 1 April 2028. Every wage in the tools includes it unless you switch it off.

Annual leave and holiday pay

Holidays Act 2003

4 weeks of paid annual leave, or 8% holiday pay. The tools count leave as hours you pay for and don't get, which is why an hour of a stylist's time costs more than their hourly rate.

Public holidays and sick leave

Holidays Act 2003

12 public holidays a year, counting your regional anniversary day, and 10 days of sick leave. The tools assume a share of both land on working days. You can change how many sick days your team typically takes.

What's changing: the Employment Leave Act

Passed July 2026

The Holidays Act is being replaced. Leave will build up by the hour: 0.0769 hours of annual leave and 0.0385 hours of sick leave for every hour worked, with casual staff paid 12.5% on top of wages in place of leave. There is a two year changeover, so today's rules still apply. We'll update the tools when the new rules take effect.

ACC levies

2026/27

Earner levy 1.75% of earnings, up to $156,641. The work levy depends on your industry classification. The tools start with the 2026/27 hairdressing rate of 0.5% of earnings, and you can change it to the figure on your own ACC invoice.

Income tax

Individuals

10.5% up to $15,600, then 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000 and 39% above. Used to estimate take-home for sole traders. Companies and trusts are taxed differently, so check with your accountant.

Buying hair from overseas

NZ Customs, checked 9 October 2026

Goods worth $1,000 or less: no duty or GST at the border, but a supplier registered for NZ GST adds it at checkout. Over that, Customs charges duty (5% on human hair unless it was made in a country with a trade deal), GST on the goods, freight and duty, and a goods levy of $51.81 plus GST by air. Couriers add their own clearance fee. The Overseas Hair Order Calculator uses these.

Card fees

Your own rate

The tools start with a blended in-salon rate of 1.2% and let you put in your own. Surcharging is still legal: the proposed ban on in-store card surcharges has not passed, and the bill has stalled (checked October 2026).

These figures are general information, checked against Inland Revenue, Employment New Zealand, ACC and MBIE. They are not tax, legal or employment advice. If a number matters to a decision, confirm it with your accountant.
